Analog Open Reel Tape Recorder with Modular Product Architecture
After the revival of vinyl, the audio tape now making a comeback into the world of music. Being the highest quality medium for analogue storage and playback, the magnetic tape technology has not just returned: But after more than 30 years, during which this technology was almost totally supplanted by digital technology, it is gaining the appreciation it deserves through a small group of enthusiasts who have been keeping it alive. Thus, this technology takes on a whole new, special place among the various sound carrier formats. For connoisseurs and audiophiles, this development is long overdue and is considered the analogue sound source par excellence.
Ballfinger is not only the world’s first manufacturer of new analog reel to reel tape recorders in the digital age, but in addition to new concepts offers a range of solutions for very different purposes: For example the M 063 H1 without any amplifier equipment, the M 063 H3 with recording function or the completely equipped M 063 H5 are already covering a wide range of applications. In addition, the M 063 HX is a completely configurable machine rounding off the portfolio. All machines, with the exception of the M 063 H1 with its shortened chassis, can be fully reconfigured utilising he module strategy we have developed for this range. This allows components to be easily removed, replaced or integrated.
The drive of the M 063 H has been eveloped for professional use. For this purpose, it has very high-torque reel motors in disc armature technology as a direct drive or belt-driven with ironless DC-motors having bell-shaped rotors and using state-of-the-art power electronics. Even with the capstan drive two versions are available: The technically sophisticated direct drive, also available as a brushless disc armature with the lowest torque ripple and enormously high-torque for very short ramp-up times, or the less costly solution with belt drive and brushless DC motor, which is in no way inferior to the excellent synchronous values of the direct drive.
The chassis of the M 063 H is made of high-strength aluminium. In addition, the top surfaces of the base plate are finely milled on both sides, so that all mechanical elements of the tape path are accurate and sustainable in both angle and height. Head block and tape heads are manufactured so precisely that a time-consuming and inaccurate settling of the tape heads is not required. All components from the reel motors to the capstan motor, power supply and audio unit are arranged so that the signal paths are kept short, but interference-critical components are spatially separated. Extensive measures for electro-magnetic shielding of the components, in particular of the motors and the tape heads could thus be avoided from the outset. All assemblies and printed circuit boards are fitted on both sides with high-quality connectors. Longer cables and signal lines are grouped together in an enclosed cable duct with magnetic shielding. Thus, service work can be carried out on all components within a very short time without having to change the position of adjacent cables or components.
The product architecture of the M 063 H is transferred to the outer appearance: Thus, the clear front-end design is not only based on purely visual-aesthetic aspects. Rather, it is the strict adherence to a well thought-out design grid, which ensures excellent operability and which allows for easy maintenance and upgrading
The class-leading modern audio electronics consist of a plug-in card system with very short signal paths. Playback and recording electronics and erase oscillator are powered by separate precision power supplies. The use of toroidal transformers and the spatial separation of audio and power electronics ensures a high unweighted signal-to-noise ratio, which is far above studio standard. This allows the playback head to be without mechanically shields.
The front panel can be move along with the audio unit. Thus, work, such as measuring on other types of tape or replacing individual amplifier cards, can be carried out from both sides. In addition, the adjustment controls on the amplifier cards are arranged in such a way that they are both accessible from the front, as well as from the rear. If the machine is mounted in a rack or console, it does not need to be removed for calibration. It is sufficient to remove the front panel.
